Christine Sicangco Lighting Design Inc. (CSLDI) and Light Plan Inc. (LPI) have earned the LIT spotlight, both emerging as the only Filipino lighting design practices honored at the 2024 LIT Lighting Design Awards.

Following their three-award success in 2023, CSLDI adds two more distinctions to their award-winning portfolio: Tayap Chapel, recognized for Religious and Spiritual Site Lighting Design, and VP Residence, awarded in the Residential Lighting Design category. Not to be outdone is lighting design practice LPI led by Jinkee de Jesus, whose monumental lighting work for Four Points Sheraton in Palawan and the Grand Wing Premium Gaming Club project nets it the Landscape Lighting Design category win and LED Interior Lighting Design win respectively.

Tayap Chapel by CSLDI
Religious and Spiritual Site Lighting Design Category Winner

The Tayap Chapel was a meaningful gift from a landowner to the local community, providing a dedicated space for worship and gathering. Designed by Architect Tonyboy Legaspi, the chapel integrates traditional materials such as bamboo, antique hardwood, and cogon grass, creating a structure that complements its natural surroundings.

CSLDI’s lighting design enhances these elements with precision and care. The use of concealed fixtures and subtle lighting minimizes light pollution, preserving the clarity of the night sky. Inside, warm lighting highlights the bamboo ceiling, creating a welcoming atmosphere, while chandeliers add a soft, central glow. Exterior uplighting gently draws attention to the chapel’s wooden facade, emphasizing craftsmanship without overshadowing the serene environment.

VP Residence by CSLDI
Residential Lighting Design Category Winner

The VP Residence demonstrates how lighting can transform modern living spaces into adaptable environments. Located in the Philippines, this home uses natural daylight to emphasize wooden finishes and clean architectural lines during the day.

As the evening sets in, tunable luminaires shift to warmer tones, creating an intimate and restful ambiance. Linear lighting fixtures integrated into the geometric ceiling ensure uniform and glare-free illumination, while uplights and downlights accentuate textures and support practical tasks. High-color rendering ensures materials and furnishings retain their visual depth under artificial lighting.

This meticulous approach to lighting design enhances the home’s functionality and elevates its overall atmosphere, seamlessly transitioning between day and night.

Four Points Sheraton Palawan by LPI
Landscape Lighting Design Category Winner

At the Four Points Sheraton in Puerto Princesa, Palawan, landscape lighting design was treated as a delicate balance between minimalism and impact. Situated amidst limestone cliffs and lush tropical greenery, the lighting design sought to enhance the resort’s natural beauty while maintaining a sense of serenity and luxury.

The lighting scheme was crafted with an emphasis on warm, controlled light, using subtle techniques to create shadows and illuminate architectural elements without overpowering the surrounding environment. Laser-cut bollards cast intricate patterns of foliage onto the ground, while downlights and wall lights are employed to accentuate the rich textures of timber finishes in seating and deck areas.

The pool area serves as the central feature, with facade lighting reflecting onto the water, creating a striking visual contrast. The lighting design strikes a balance between creating dramatic effects and ensuring safety and security for guests. Ultimately, the space is designed to offer an inviting and comfortable environment for relaxation and enjoyment.

Grand Wing Premium Gaming Club by LPI
LED Interior Lighting Design Category Winner

The Grand Wing Premium Gaming Club, located within one of Manila’s renowned integrated resorts, offers an upscale experience where lighting plays a crucial role in enhancing the space’s luxurious atmosphere. The lighting design was carefully crafted to highlight the interior finishes and provide a comfortable environment for guests. The color scheme favors contemporary, dark, and elegant tones, with lighting elements chosen to complement and elevate the space.

Mid-power, glare-free downlights are strategically positioned to showcase special materials, dining tables, and other design features. The open layout of the club includes dining areas, lounges, and meeting rooms, and the lighting design addresses each function without creating harsh contrasts or disrupting the flow between spaces.

General lighting is provided by DALI dimmable fixtures set at 2700 Kelvin, while 3000 Kelvin fixtures highlight key features such as displays. Narrow-beam downlights illuminate the food and dining tables, creating a vibrant yet refined atmosphere. Special attention was given to millwork with reflective surfaces to prevent unwanted glare while ensuring displays were beautifully lit. High-color-rendering downlights with medium beam angles were selected for the artwork and sculptures, ensuring they were properly illuminated without causing visual discomfort.

The LIT Lighting Design Awards recognize excellence in architectural and lighting design, celebrating projects that demonstrate innovation, artistry, and technical mastery. A jury of industry experts, including academics, professionals, and influential figures from the lighting community, reviews each submission.
