Four grueling months of screenings and deliberations, hundreds of entries to vet, and four award categories to fill; it was quite the journey for both entrant and jury for the second edition of the biennial Good Design Award Philippines 2022.
Created in 2019 to “celebrate objects, images, places, and systems that embody the principles of good design (innovativeness, form, and function) combined with the Philippine value of malasakit (compassion)” the Good Design Award attracted 161 entries nationwide for its second edition. The awards program consists of four awards: “the Red, Green, Gold, and the Gran Prix Malasakit Award… [which] recognize technical design excellence together with its impacts in addressing the UN Sustainable Development Goals and helping improve the quality of human life.” The latter award is considered the most-coveted prize, as it is only awarded once per award edition, and only when there’s a worthy candidate. Last year’s Gran Prix Malasakit winner was the eco-friendly hollow blocks developed by Po Lite Technology.
The Good Design Jury, chaired by Ar. Royal Pineda of BUDJI+ROYAL Architecture + Design, was tasked with the unenviable challenge of narrowing down the entries based on the following criteria: 1. Form (25%), 2. Functionality (25%), 3. Innovativeness (25%), and finally 4. Malasakit (25%). The jury, which consisted of design luminaries like Ar. Joey Yupangco, creative director Jowee Alviar, entrepreneur Reese Fernandez-Ruiz, and multi-awarded designers Kenneth Cobonpue and Bea Valdes, narrowed down the field of entries to 45, from which this edition’s winners were ascertained.
The winners were finally revealed in an in-person awards ceremony a few minutes ago at the Ayala Museum, Makati City, in the presence of program partners UNDP Philippines, ASEAN Japan Centre, and the Japan Institute of Design Promotion. Winners get to take home an iconic Arturo Luz Tribute trophy, lifetime use of the Good Design Award seal of excellence, and appearance within the Good Design Award Philippines Yearbook and Winners gallery. Without further ado, meet this year’s winners! •

Gold Award
“The Gold Award is given to entries that exemplified the best application of disciplines from our criteria for judging. Every design category (Object-making, Place-making, Image-making, System/Service) will have its own Gold Awardee which will be chosen from the pool of Red awardees. When given the Gold Award, the entry will no longer receive the Red Award since the former is higher in terms of honor. Should the jury decide that there’s no entry that merits the Gold Award, then there will be no Gold awardee.”

Gran Prix (Malasakit Award)
“The Gran Prix Malasakit award is the highest form of recognition from the Good Design Award Philippines. Receiving this award entails that the entry didn’t just exemplify good design, but it also has the most impact in addressing the UN Sustainability and Development Goals. There can only be one Gran Prix Malasakit awardee every recognition ceremony. If the jury deems no entry meets the criteria for this award, then there can be no Gran Prix Malasakit awardee.”
