The Philippines makes a phenomenal showing in the Future Projects shortlist of the World Architecture Festival 2021, netting four shortlisted entries (the most for the country in the Future Projects division so far), and spawning three WAFX category wins from Carlo Calma Consultancy (with lead architect Sou Fujimoto Architects for Museum for Architecture + Residences) and WTA Architecture and Design Studio.
Joining the two Pinoy WAFX winners in the Future Projects shortlist are two WAF newcomers: Buensalido Architects, with their Competition Entry category project, the ‘Freedom Memorial Museum’, and previous WAF longlister Habulan and Ngo Design Studio, nabbing a Civic Future Project slot with ‘Farms for Feasts.’ Do watch out for our upcoming pieces on the two studios as we get to know them and their competition entries more intimately.
While a modest number of ASEAN firms turned up in this year’s Futures shortlist, there is hope that more will turn up in the Completed Projects division, like the last WAF edition in 2019. Notable repeat appearances from our ASEAN neighbors include Singapore’s Park + Associates, with their entry ‘Second Nature at Mount Vernon’ appearing in the Civic and Competition entry categories, and Bangkok-based CREATIVE CREWS LTD., with the Health category entry ‘Crown Prince Hospital Medical Centre Series’ in Sra Keaw, Thailand. CREATIVE CREWS LTD notably won the Health category in INSIDE Festival of Interiors 2019 for ‘Classroom for the Blind.’
We will be talking to all our Pinoy entrants and some of our ASEAN peers about their entries and competition preparations in the lead-up to the WAF so do stay tuned. For the full Future Projects list of the 187 shortlisted entries from 40 countries, click here. •
