We’ve made history again at the WAF Student Design Charette! Four Filipino student teams join this year’s finalists, our largest and only multiple number of shortlisted entries yet.
Last year’s winning school, the University of Northern Philippines, returns this 2024 with two entries (teams of Rachelle Anne Arce and Jeronimo Valdez). They are joined by another set of two student teams from Mapúa Malayan Colleges Mindanao (submissions by Jasper Marie Arnilla and Arnel Rasheed Defensor).
The shortlisted student teams for WAF 2024 are as follows. WAF said it will invite a maximum of eight (8) entries this year. Half of the list are from the Philippines:
- Queen’s University Belfast, Ireland
- Universidad Dr. José Matías Delgado, El Salvador
- University of Dundee, United Kingdom
- Mapúa Malayan Colleges Mindanao, Philippines
- University of Northern Philippines, Philippines (Team 1)
- University of Northern Philippines, Philippines (Team 2)
- Mapúa Malayan Colleges Mindanao, Philippines
- University of the West of England, United Kingdom
WAF Student Design Charette 2024
Student teams (comprising up to six students and two teachers) were invited to identify a building, place, neighborhood, or landscape that would benefit from a radical intervention to improve a) its condition and b) its potential to accommodate new uses, ideas, or technologies. The event will “focus on some aspect of built environment futures, in line with the WAF conference theme, ‘Tomorrow’.”
Entries closed last June 21, with the jurors having over a month to deliberate. The shortlisted teams will be invited to present their projects live in front of a global jury and audience. Only one (1) will be chosen as the winner and awarded during the WAF Gala Night.
The Philippines at the Student Charette
The first Philippine WAF Student Design Charette placement was in 2013, with the University of San Carlos’ Village in Box bringing home the grand prize. Ten years later, the University of Northern Philippines made the second shortlist and victory in 2023.
Will the country once again bag the Student Charette prize this year?
