Patrick and Leizle, congratulations again for making it to the shortlist and live crits stage of the World Architecture Festival (WAF) 2024! Now, The Rise at Monterrazas has already captured significant attention, even before being shortlisted for WAF. What would you say is the genius of your project? Can you briefly explain what sets it apart from its shortlisted peers?
Patrick Lendel Go and Leizle Go, principals architects of LLG Architects Design Studio: Thanks for having us! The Rise embodies the principle of “form follows landscape,” embracing a sustainable design that respects and enhances the land’s natural contours through terracing. Drawing deeply from the Banaue Rice Terraces—an iconic symbol of ancestral ingenuity—we adapted this age-old approach to modern architecture. This terraced method not only optimizes the use of the land but infuses each level with distinct functional and visual character, creating a striking façade that differentiates The Rise from conventional urban developments.
Our project bridges the spaciousness of a traditional home with the convenience of condominium living. Expansive, landscaped terraces provide residents with open spaces that are rare in high-rise structures, making this development a regional first. Additionally, the inclusion of Cebu City’s first inclined lift adds a contemporary touch to the nature-focused design, enhancing accessibility and embodying a seamless blend of innovation and natural harmony.
WAF’s just around the corner, and aside from the practice crits care of GROHE and Kanto, how else have you prepared for your live presentation? Which firms do you see as your strongest competitors?
LLG Architects Design Studio: Preparing for WAF has been a meticulous process; we’ve refined every detail of our presentation to ensure it delivers our vision with precision and impact. Our focus has been on presenting a comprehensive story that underscores our approach and the value we bring to sustainable design. This journey has also been an exercise in embracing constructive feedback and pushing ourselves to new heights.
Rather than viewing this solely as a competition, we see it as a platform to learn and be inspired by the exceptional work of our peers. Being shortlisted is already an honor, and we’re eager to engage in this prestigious event. It’s an opportunity to hone our skills, expand our perspectives, and elevate our craft.
Indeed! The shortlist placement is already a win! As a WAF first-timer, what excites you about attending the festival? What do you hope to gain from this experience?
LLG Architects Design Studio: We’re most excited about immersing ourselves in an environment full of creative energy and innovation. Connecting with talented architects from around the globe and witnessing their remarkable projects firsthand is invaluable. Their work inspires and fuels our passion for pushing boundaries in design. This is a unique chance to gain new insights and perspectives that can invigorate our approach. We hope to return with a wealth of ideas and inspiration, driving us to continue evolving and innovating in our projects.
Best of luck, Team LLG, and we look forward to seeing you at the live crits!

The Brief
The vision for The Rise at Monterrazas was clear: create a condominium development that harmonizes with the landscape while honoring Filipino heritage. The aim was to merge innovative architecture with cultural storytelling, producing a sustainable residential space that resonates with past and future generations.
Context
Inspired by the Banaue Rice Terraces—a centuries-old marvel hand-carved by the Ifugao ancestors—the design of The Rise acknowledges this cultural landmark’s craftsmanship and resilience. This project, planned during the global COVID-19 pandemic, emerged from a collective yearning for natural spaces that foster well-being. The development focused on connecting residents to nature, fulfilling a need for balance and serenity in an increasingly urbanized world.
Design Solution
Embracing the concept of “form follows landscape,” The Rise’s architecture replicates the rice fields’ terraced contours. This approach honors ancestral techniques, shaping the structure to align with the land’s natural slope. The step-like design evokes the terraces’ visual flow and symbolizes progress—bridging heritage with contemporary living. The building’s curved form mirrors architecture’s dynamic, evolving nature and emphasizes the continuity between history and modernity.
Features
The Rise features 146 units within its 19-storey structure, each designed with livability at the forefront. Residents enjoy panoramic views and spacious outdoor areas that integrate the tranquility of a traditional home with the conveniences of urban condominium living. Innovations include inclined lifts for fluid vertical access and privacy-focused landscape elements that enhance aesthetics and function.
Strategically incorporated natural light and ventilation create an inviting, breathable environment, further complemented by abundant greenery that blurs the lines between indoors and outdoors. The project emphasizes connection with nature, ensuring residents experience a balanced and harmonious lifestyle.
Sustainability
As a pioneering development in Cebu City, The Rise aspires to earn a 5-star BERDE certification, a recognition tailored to the Philippines’ environmental and cultural landscape. This certification highlights the project’s commitment to sustainable practices suited to local climate conditions and cultural values. Integrating green spaces and mindful design underscores a dedication to environmental stewardship and community wellness. •
