“Amazonas, as its name suggests, borrows its design recipe from the Amazon jungle. You’ll find a mixture of tributes to flora and fauna, a variety of colors, and organic textures and finishes that bow to natural elements and Latin American culture,” opens Malaysian practice Seshan Design. The space sits within The Exchange TRX, a 70-acre retail development by the Ministry of Finance Malaysia.
Concrete ledges sandwich dense plantwork at the restaurant’s façade, with a parade of potted greens forming a porous screen for the al fresco section on the ground floor. More greenery tumbles down from the second-level balcony, softening the façade’s sharp, rectilinear lines and nodding to the earthy lushness of the Amazon. Generous glazing offers a preview of the interiors: a raucous tribute to Latin American culture, expressed in wood, stone, metal, and deep jewel tones.

Upon entrance to Amazonas, guests are greeted by the main Parilla Grill to the right, which Seshan regards as the space’s centerpiece. This portion is characterized by a play of dark and neutral colors and textures, with its fireplace and stone walls serving as representations of the elements of heat, fire, and stone.
Solid merbau with beveled edges and a rustic effect rules Amazonas’ flooring at the first level, while red clay brick veneer was employed for the dining area’s floors. The solid merbau was carried through by the designers for the staircase treads.
Throughout the space, guests will find display pieces and trinkets alluding to Latin American culture and cuisine, including sculptures, patterned pots and vases, and even illustrations of colorful bird species seen on the continent.
“For both the levels’ walls, we used solid rustic timber panelling, rusted mild steel panels, and granite strips,” Seshan shares. “We also incorporated charred solid pinewood for the joinery of some elements, while stained senply veneer was used for the rest.”
Greenery spills from the second-floor balcony, softening the structure’s hard lines and echoing the planted entryway below. Accordion doors open to an al fresco seating area with open sightlines to the Kuala Lumpur skyline. Diners get front-row seats to TRX The Exchange’s landscaped rooftop, home to the faceted pinnacle of Exchange 106—Malaysia’s fourth tallest tower—and the gleaming glass roof of Apple Tun Razak, the country’s first Apple Store.
Inside the second level, guests will find a bar and lounge area that is open for reservations, which hosts pockets of privacy with direct access to the bar for private events. Amazonas’ bar area is fueled by mood lighting, with an accent wall to its right holding colorful artworks. The bar also serves its beverages in unique Tiki glasses, adhering to the overall look and feel of the space.
Beyond appealing to sight, smell, touch, and taste, Amazonas completes the immersive dining experience with sound. The restaurant invites patrons to linger, connect, and celebrate with curated playlists for everyday dining, and weekend DJ sets that transform the space’s energy into late-night fiestas. “If you ever find yourself in Kuala Lumpur, Amazonas is the destination to drink, dine, and dance!” •
