Outstanding Property Award London is an international award-giving body instituted “…to recognize the efforts of talented international Property developers, Architects, and Interior Designers who aim to improve our daily lives with their practical, well-thought-out properties and projects.” The 2022 OPAL is organized by the Farmani Group, the organizer of the “International Design Awards (IDA), Architecture Masterprize, Prix de la Photographie in Paris, London International Creative Awards, and the Annual Lucie Awards for Photography.”

What follows is a brief project description of each project from the firm. •

Winners, Architectural Design: Educational/Institutional Category

Miriam College – Alviera

Lead designer: Jose Eduardo Calma
Other team members: Albert Ascalon, Sara Virina, Marcelo Calma, Krister Abla, and Juan Paolo Pena
Space syntax: Leandro Poco

The new Miriam College is a sprawling 29,000 sqm educational compound, consisting of a three-story double sinusoidal complex that tightly embraces the site’s rolling terrain. The academic building guides people in and out through spatial cues that follow a natural rhythm. The campus is organized for students, teachers, staff, and visitors to move about its three levels by way of the dynamic, double sinusoidal circulation spine. The learning and interaction spines create a quadrant of education, one that promotes learning, creativity, recreation, and social interaction.

Davao Civic Center

Lead designer: Jose Eduardo Calma
Other team members: Albert Ascalon and Ayn Del Mundo

The vanda sanderiana, widely considered the “queen of Philippine flowers,” is the inspiration for the Civic Center project. The steel-framed structure is sheathed in a petalled façade giving rise to five distinctive roof expressions and seven façade arrangements that echo the forms of its floral muse. The gaps between the petals are filled with high-performance, insulated glass walls, while the usage of multi-colored dichroic film helps evoke a sense of movement and color within the interior spaces.
