KARE didn’t just open its fourth showroom at Garden Towers, Makati. It threw open the doors, rolled out the red carpet (literally in this case), and invited everyone to leave design conventions at the curb. The 43-year-old German furniture marque pulled the wraps off of their newest Philippine outpost with a hotel-inspired theme, extending an invitation to everyone ready to embrace the art of living vibrantly and to “Check In to the KARE Life.”

KARE co-founder and CEO (Which in KARE-speak stands for Chief in Energy and Optimism) Peter Schönhofen was around to kick off the festivities and expressed his admiration for the Philippine market: “The Philippines has a vibrant market for expressive designs, and we felt it was the perfect time to bring KARE’s playful and bold approach to home decor here. Filipinos have an incredible appreciation for creativity and individuality, which resonates deeply with our brand.”

Dining Room by Teddy Manuel

In line with its mission to make designing and styling one’s space accessible to everyone, KARE showcased the creative chops of florist Teddy Manuel, lifestyle journalist Marie Lozano, and respected interior designer Chat Fores. Each was tasked with styling a ‘room’ that illustrates how KARE’s diverse product range can help individuals personalize their spaces.

Some standout pieces in the brand’s sizable space include the Caldera collection, with its sleek black tabletops and chrome bases; the Ciao sofa, with its plush and elegant Italian lines; and the Grace collection, which brings a contemporary twist to classic materials like mango wood and marble.

It seems KARE’s “Joy of Living” credo has resonated with a country known for being one of the most upbeat and optimistic in the world. So, what’s next after opening four stores in the Philippines and establishing 200 outlets in nearly 50 countries? Kanto caught up with Peter Schönhofen to discuss his first impressions of the country, KARE’s unique approach to design, and what’s next for the brand.

KARE Co-founder and CEO Peter Schönhofen

Peter Schönhofen, KARE co-founder and Chief of Energy and Optimism (CEO): Yes! First time! It’s funny—I’ve been around Southeast Asia but never made it here. We almost came a few times, but the weather got in the way. This time, I’m finally here, and it’s fantastic!

Schönhofen: Exactly! My right hand, Andreja Hocking, has been a huge help in making this happen, and I’m really touched by how much Filipinos have embraced our brand!

Schönhofen: Oh, for sure. There are always times when we look at what we’re doing. But I guess it helps that we think of ourselves as if we were a fashion brand. We used to have this trendy “Renegade Opulence” style—living like rock stars, very bold. But then we realized it was just a trend. When we pivoted in new directions, some folks were confused. I told them that, like in fashion, we need to keep evolving to stay fresh.

Schönhofen: At the end of the day, it’s all about the customer. Whether they’re a hotel guest or someone in our store, that’s who matters. Initially, we faced some skepticism from retailers back in Germany, but as we proved our unique offerings, they started wanting to incorporate us.

Schönhofen: Exactly! We stick to our philosophy. If customers love it and can afford it, that’s our direction. We want to empower everyone to embrace what connects with them in terms of design!

Schönhofen: Oh, absolutely! While I don’t directly handle the collections, my partner [Jürgen Reiter] works with Filipino designers. There’s a lot of potential here! Local architects and interior designers have been blending our unique style with their design know-how, which has led to some exciting-looking spaces like the ones in our showroom now.

Schönhofen: Really positive! I went to our other stores today incognito. Customers didn’t know who I was, and I could see their genuine reactions to our products. It’s cool to gauge how they feel about KARE’s offerings without any preconceived ideas.

Schönhofen: The KARE effect is about more than the product; it’s about how we position ourselves as a company, where we want to deliver value without compromising on design or quality. But also recognizing that our products can only find their potential from our customers. From architects and interior designers to creative professionals like you, anyone! You all bring the magic to KARE!

Schönhofen: Yes! But beyond standout items that inspire our customers, sustainability is also key for us. We bring in products from all over the globe, but our focus is on creating lasting pieces, not just trendy items. Trends come and go, but sustainability is here to stay at KARE.

Schönhofen: Definitely. Sustainability isn’t just a buzzword; it’s a necessity. We want to be part of that conversation. With our ‘Let’s Do Better’ initiative, we are ensuring that our products last longer, which means they can be used far longer and can bring joy to a second or even a third owner. •
