The country’s festival for Philippine design and creativity is back! Design Week Philippines 2024 opens at the Yuchengco Museum on Saturday, October 12, and will culminate at the CCP Black Box Theater on October 19.
With the theme “Unearthing Islandness,” the event’s 13th edition encourages exploration of what it means to design with and for islands. It calls to reflect on the design of our archipelago’s unique identity, weaving ancestral knowledge, maritime consciousness, and indigenous practices that inform Filipino design.
“Islandness is not smallness,” the Design Center of the Philippines said. “It unlocks the potential of diverse stories coming together as an archipelago. It seeks to foster a rekindling with our Filipino spirit in hopes of cultivating our design seascape for greatness.”
The festival offers a deep dive into island wisdom, looking at how local communities, indigenous practices, and maritime consciousness must shape our approach to design, community, culture, and innovation.
As in previous editions, the four main activations of Design Week Philippines namely Design Talks, Design Workshops, Design Tours, and Design ATBP will comprise of various design professionals and creative brands that will share their insights, experiences, and innovative approaches to design.
Participants will have access to presentations and roundtable discussions centered on different aspects and issues in Philippine design via Design Talks, while Design Workshops will provide learning sessions focused on introducing and/or nurturing essential design skills.
Design Tours will showcase on a national scale, illustrating the richness and diversity of Filipino design. This will be complemented by Design ATBP, which hosts design experiences that encourage guests to connect and have fun while celebrating the design community.
Multiple design-week-related activities and events will also be held in participating cities and provinces such as a Typography Film Photowalk around Baguio, a cook a meal in the garden experience in Antique, and a free risograph workshop in Cainta, Rizal.
The festival will once again open with the State of Philippine Design, a panel discussion that brings together thought leaders in Design Policy, Object Making, Place Making, Systems, and Service Design to examine the shifting landscape of Philippine design. The session will focus on how Filipino designers, makers, and policymakers are crafting a future that draws from the nation’s archipelagic environment and cultural heritage.
